A move to Johnson City, TN put Zeigler in a position to be a part of not only the Tennessee music scene but also the Asheville, NC scene and formed a nice landscape to release a new project. The setting was rural, family farms, scenic mountains and old time religion. The sounds were old trucks and tractors, quiet, cool evenings and old friends sharing stories of life. The album is Flint’s past, present and future all finding their niche and working together. Fender Telecasters through old tube amps, subtle organ lines, the crack of the snare drum and vocal harmonies that are sung from soul to soul, “Marks of Another Year” is all it’s own, not just recycled sounds from previous releases.
The title track ‘Marks of Another Year’ is an example of Zeigler’s lyrical depth, the telling of a soul revisiting the memories of the past and seeing it for all it is, painful, beautiful and real. The true story told in ‘Soldiers Song’ is a harrowing tale of the burial of a small town soldier through the eyes of a passerby. ‘Soldiers Song’ is a timeless, dynamic track that hits home for all of us. ‘The Rose’, with its instantly-stuck-in-your-head guitar riff and lyrical imagery, gives a nod to Flint’s Grantham Road days. Take an old, whiskey drinking preacher from the hills of Tennessee, give him a dirty, overdriven guitar playing a driving chord progression to preach over and you have a good feeling for the track ‘HoldKissKill’. ‘Oceans Laughter’ continues to prove Zeigler’s knack for writing immensely catchy tunes that still hold weight.
